A
due anni di distanza dall'inizio del tour dei "nuovi" White Lion e in attesa
dell'uscita del nuovo album, abbiamo fatto due chiacchiere con il batterista
Troy Patrick Farrell...
Innanzitutto, come sei entrato a far parte dei White Lion?
Chiesi di poter suonare nel tour da solista di Mike Tramp e quando lui decise di
mettere insieme questa nuova line up dei White Lion scelse me come batterista.
Ha
suonato con molte formazioni diverse durante il suo tour e alla fine ha scelto i
musicisti più adatti per continuare il progetto White Lion.
Chiaramente tu sei parte di un evento importante per i fan dell'hard rock, come
una reunion dei White Lion... come è nata l'idea?
Beh
non è una vera e propria "reunion" dato che non vi sono tutti i membri
originali. Comunque è stato Mike, la voce, il co-fondatore e compositore che ha
deciso di rimettere in piedi alcune delle canzoni del vecchio periodo per gli
appassionati.
Penso sia fantastico poter suonare in una band storica degli anni '80:
raccontami del tuo primo concerto con i WL.
Abbiamo fatto il nostro primo concerto dopo una sola settimana di prove e dopo
che ci eravamo incontrati per la prima volta in studio a Los Angeles. Forse il
primo show è stato un po’ grezzo perchè non sempre una prova riuscita bene si
traduce in un buon concerto. Comunque ora che ci conosciamo tutti bene, possiamo
anche stare 5 o 6 mesi senza vederci, salire sul palco e suonare come se
avessimo fatto un concerto la sera prima.
E a
proposito dei fan dei "vecchi" White Lion? Hai presente la scena del film "Rock
Star" dove i fan di Bobby Bears gridano al nuovo cantante "Ridateci Bobby!"? È
mai successa una cosa del genere durante il tour?
Sì
l’ho visto, è davvero un buon film. Sai, fino a quando non sei Tommy Lee o
qualcuno del genere alla gente importa poco di chi sia il batterista. Quelli
difficili da dimenticare sono i chitarristi e chiaramente qualche fan ci ha
fatto la classica domanda: "Dov'è Vito?"… ma io non conosco mai la risposta.
Sarai stanco di tutte queste domande sul passato dei White Lion, parliamo del
futuro adesso, che genere di musica ci dovremo aspettare dal nuovo album?
Non
puoi avere un vero futuro senza un passato ed è il passato che ti ha portato ad
essere ciò che sei oggi, giusto? Ed è giusto fare domande sul passato, dato che
molte persone lo richiedono, e noi cerchiamo oggi di creare un nuovo "passato"
per il futuro o qulacosa di simile!
I
White Lion nel 2007 non hanno cambiato sound e non sono andati in una nuova
direzione. Le canzoni di Tramp & Co. che sono state scritte avranno il sound che
i fedeli fan vogliono ascoltare, saranno solo un po’ "cresciute".
Nessuno vuole ascoltare un album dei White Lion in stile "My Chemical
Romance"...
Ci
potremo aspettare anche un video?
Credo sia troppo presto per dirlo. E credo sia anche difficile aspettarci di
vederlo trasmesso, se non da You Tube e simili. Persino artisti importanti come
Britney Spears, Beyonce o Bon Jovi difficilmente vedranno trasmessi i propri
video su MTV o VH1, dove è pieno di celebrità di serie D o musicisti che
radunano un gruppo di “signore” in una casa per cercare di trovare una madre ai
loro figli.
Cosa
ne pensi della nuova scena glam rock?
Non
sono molto esperto della nuova scena glam rock, non ho mai apprezzato quella
vecchia quindi dubito che mi interesserò di quella nuova. Credo sia molto più
popolare in Europa piuttosto che negli Stati Uniti. Mi piacciono molto i Gemini
5 che hanno suonato con noi nel 2006 durante il tour europeo.
Quale band ti piace di più?
I
Cheap Trick! Lo so, non sono una glam band, ma è sempre una buona risposta alla
domanda "qual è la tua band preferita?".
Qualcuno ha detto che la reunion dei WL è solo una mossa pubblicitaria, qual è
la tua opinione in merito?
Una
mossa pubblicitaria? Sinceramente non capisco cosa intendano con questa frase.
Se significa progettare un nuovo album mentre si suonano le vecchie canzoni
allora avranno ragione, ma ti ripeto, questa non è una reunion dato che è una
band tutta nuova con alla voce il cantante dei White Lion e 4 ragazzi che
portano un gran rispetto verso chi ha composto le canzoni originali. Credimi se
ti dico questo, nessuno qui si è arricchito con il tour e il nuovo album non
l'abbiamo fatto affinché Mike potesse costruire una gran piscina nel suo
giardino o perchè io potessi farmi una bella vacanza alle Hawaii. I fan possono
dire una cosa del genere di qualcuno che non ci mette il cuore, ma non è di
certo il caso dei 5 ragazzi che oggi fanno parte dei White Lion.
E
cosa ne pensi invece di tutte le reunion che abbiamo visto negli ultimi anni?
Beh,
io e la mia ragazza ci siamo lasciati e poi siamo ritornati insieme, perchè non
può farlo anche un gruppo? Noi suoniamo per vivere, e penso che quando hai
creato qualcosa che ha fatto successo, è difficile lasciartelo alle spalle e
dimenticarlo per sempre. Poi sicuramente molte band si sono rimesse insieme
perchè i loro vari promoter e manager glie l'hanno imposto, e se la gente vuole
questo e noi riusciamo a soddisfarli e a guadagnarci da vivere allo stesso
tempo, perchè no?
Dicci qualcosa di succulento sul futuro dei White Lion, non vediamo l'ora di
rivedervi dal vivo in Italia!
Realizzeremo presto un dvd tratto da uno show che abbiamo fatto in Europa, e
presto uscirà il nuovo album che speriamo di presentare con un nuovo tour.
Amiamo l'Italia e gli italiani, siete tra il pubblico più caloroso del mondo e
speriamo davvero di tornare nel 2008!
Qual
è il tuo ricordo più bello dello scorso tour eruopeo?
Ne
ho tantissimi ma credo sia il concerto di Trieste e l'ospitalità che abbiamo
ricevuto dai nostri "fratelli". Una vera cena all'italiana con un buon vino!
La
nostra webzine ha una sezione che si chiama "Main Event", dove due musicisti che
hanno fatto parte della stessa band e si sono divisi, possono "battibeccare".
Cosa pensi potrebbe succedere in un main event fra Mike Tramp e Vito Bratta?
Penso che si bacerebbero e tornerebbero insieme, andrebbero a comprare i mobili
all'Ikea per vivere insieme in un loft a New York city. Ma se dovessi scegliere
preferirei un combattimento fra Tramp e un canguro australiano!

First of
all, how did you come to join White Lion?
I was asked to
tour with Mike Tramp on his 2001 USA Solo tour, and when he decided to assemble
this version of White Lion, he asked me to play drums. He has played with many
line ups live to support his solo albums, and has hand picked the guys best
suited to continue White Lion.
You're part of a very big event for hard rock fans as the White Lion reunion
continues, how was this idea was born?
It’s not so
much a “reunion” seeing a key member isn’t involved; however, it is the Voice,
Co-founder and songwriter that decided to make a run at bringing back some of
the songs from the old days to those interested.
I think it should be great playing with an historic band of 80's,
tell me about your first gig with WL.
We had our
first show after only a week’s worth of rehearsals and meeting each other for
the first time in a studio in Los Angeles. The first show was probably a little
rough because being a well rehearsed band doesn’t always translate to the stage
at first. Now that we know each other in the “live” sense, we can be apart for
5 or 6 months, and jump on stage and play as if we had a show the night before.
And what about the "old" WL fans? Have you seen "Rock Star" (the movie), when
the Bobby Bears’ fans were screaming "Bring back Bobby!”. Has that ever
happened during a tour?
Yes, of course
I have seen Rock Star. It’s a pretty good flick! Unless you’re Tommy Lee or
something, people aren’t totally concerned about who the drummers are. The die
hard guitar players and some fans ask the obligatory question, “Where’s Vito” at
times, sure…but I never know that answer.
Maybe you're tired of all the questions about White Lion's past, so let's talk
about the future of the band, what kind of music are we going to get with the
new album?
You can’t
really have a future without a past and it’s that past that brings one to where
you are today right? So, it’s fair to ask questions about the past, as that’s
what most people recall as we now try to make a new “past” for the future…or
something like that! White Lion in 2007 isn’t about changing the sound or going
in a new direction. The music Tramp and Co. has written sounds like what White
Lion fans of the past will want to hear, but with some growth. No one wants to
hear a “My Chemical Romance” White Lion album.
Can we also expect a new video?
I think it’s
too early to tell about that. It’s also hard to expect that it would get played
anywhere other than YouTube or something, and even artists as popular as Britney
Spears, Beyonce, or Bon Jovi hardly get video play anymore on Mtv or Vh1, it’s
all about D List Celebs embarrassing themselves, or musicians packing a bunch of
“ladies” in a house looking for a mother for their kids.
What do you think about the new glam rock scene?
I’m not too
familiar with a “new” glam scene. I never liked the old one, so I doubt I’d go
looking for a “new” one. I think that’s more popular in Europe than it is in
the states. I dug Gemini 5 who did a show with us on our 06 Europe tour.
Which band you like most?
Cheap Trick!
I know, not a new glam band, but always a good answer for the question of
“favorite band”.
Some say that a WL reunion is just a marketing scheme, what's your opinion about
it?
A marketing
scheme? I’m not sure what they mean by that. I guess if we’re marketing a new
album, while playing the old stuff, then I guess they’re right. And again, it’s
NOT a reunion, since this is basically a new band with the Voice of White Lion
and a new crop of guys paying respect to the ones that recorded the original
songs. Trust me when I say this, no one is getting rich off the fact that White
Lion is touring and making an album, so it’s not being done so Tramp can put a
new swimming pool in his back yard, or so I can take a vacation in Hawaii. The
fans can tell when someone’s heart isn’t into it, and I don’t think that’s the
case with the 5 guys currently in White Lion.
And what's your opinion about all these reunions we saw in last few years?
I’ve broken up
with my girlfriend and gotten back together with her, why can’t a band? We do
this for a living, and when you find something that has success, it’s hard to
just put it behind you forever and ignore it. Also, most of these bands get
together again because promoters and agents see a demand, and if the people want
it, and we can earn a living at the same time, while satisfying fans, why not?
Tell us something hot about White Lion’s future, we can't wait to see you on
stage in Italy!
White Lion is
expecting to release a live DVD from a date we did in Europe soon as well as the
new album with new material and then hopefully some touring to support it. We
love Italy and Italians, some of the most gracious people in the world, and I
hope to go back in 08!
What's your favorite memory of the European tour?
I have so many,
but I think our show in Trieste and the hospitality we got from the “Brothers”.
A real Italian dinner and wine!
And now the last "evil" question....As you can see in our webzine, we have a
special section called "Main event" where two ex members of the same band "fight".
What's would happen if it was "Mike Tramp vs. Vito Bratta"?
They’d kiss
and make up, buy furniture at IKEA, and live together in a loft in New York
City. But if I had to choose, it would be Tramp, he’s had to fight Kangaroo’s
in the Outback of Australia.
