SONS OF ANGELS, Hans O. Solli - Intervista a cura di Ale Coraby

I norvegesi Sons Of Angels escono per la prima volta sulla scena melodick hard rock nel 1990 con Cowgirl, sotto Atlantic Records. Suoni personalizzati ed idee europee accompagnano il gruppo in un decennio di musica di cui si sa poco, per ora, ma noi di Roxx Zone abbiamo avuto l’opportunità di intervistare il cantante che con qualche delucidazione ci avvicina alla scoperta del passato e, forse, anche del loro futuro.

Com’è nata la band e perchè avete deciso di usare Sons Of Angels come nome?

La band venne formata da Lars K. e Torstein. Io entrai quando organizzarono un’audizione alla ricerca di un cantante. In realtà era già troppo tardi per me, ma non essendo loro soddisfatti dei primi cantanti provati mi venne data una possibilità e la cosà funzionò praticamente all’istante. Gli altri due membri arrivarono poco dopo.

Non ho mai sentito nulla riguardo un tour italiano dei Sons Of Angels, sai dirmi perchè?

No, purtroppo non abbiamo mai avuto l’opportunità di fare un tour in Italia. Nel 1990 ci fu un tour americano, alcune esibizioni selezionate in Inghilterra come pure un tour scandinavo con i Magnum ed uno tedesco con gli Steelheart.

In internet non è possibile trovare un sito web o un blog dedicato alla band. È per caso una scelta di marketing?

No, dell’opportunità di aprire un sito web se ne parla ormai da anni, speriamo che ciò accada in un prossimo futuro.

Il video di ”Cowgirl” è l’unico che i fans possono vedere (e con difficoltà): c’è qualcosa in più che dobbiamo sapere a riguardo o esistono altri video di cui non sappiamo l’esistenza?

Quello di ”Cowgirl” è l’unico video ufficiale della band, è stato registrato a Parigi nell’aprile del 1990.

Il look del gruppo negli anni ’90 era molto simile a quello delle band americane di aor come Firehouse per esempio... quindi in che tipo di rock potete inserire la vostra musica?

Non credo di aver capito bene la domanda, ma suppongo che i Sons Of Angels possano essere definiti una hard rock band melodica, o come venivamo etichettati all’epoca, 'funk metal scandinavo' insieme agli Electric Boys, gli altri maggiori esponenti del genere.

Penso che una grossa differenza tra voi e le altre band sia in primo luogo il suono delle chitarre. Da quello che posso vedere dalle foto all’interno del cd si tratta di chitarre Kramer, famose per il suono particolare. Pensi che sia il suono diverso sia le idee musicali europee possano fare la differenza?

Effettivamente avevamo qualcosa di europeo che agli americani piaceva molto, che fossero il suono delle chitarre o il songwriting questo non lo so, forse la prima è una domanda da fare al chitarrista Staffan William-Olsson.

Parlando di Slumber With The Lion, tu lo definisci come un’uscita segreta. Perchè?

Be’, l’uscita in se forse non era segreta, ma l’origine dell’album certamente aveva qualcosa di oscuro. Quando uscì, nel 2002, la casa discografica Z Records volle farlo passare come un nuovo album, per cui noi non dicemmo nulla su quando vennero realmente registrate le canzoni. Ma posso dire ora, per la prima volta, che il disco aveva dieci anni al momento della sua uscita! Venne registrato in un periodo tra il dicembre 1990 e il marzo 1992 ed era nostra intenzione farlo uscire lo stesso anno. Dopo vari problemi con la casa discografica, la band si sciolse e si spense tutto per circa dieci anni.

Quando comprai l’album, ero sicuro di trovare nuove foto ed ero ansioso di rivedere i Sons Of Angels dieci anni dopo, ma con grande sorpresa ho trovato le stesse foto del primo album? Perchè?

Vale la risposta precedente: pensavamo fosse fuori luogo mettere nuove foto in un disco vecchio di dieci anni.

Con l’uscita di Slumber With The Lion tu dicesti :”se quest’album funzionerà potete stare sicuri che ne produrremo un altro”... cos’è successo? O dobbiamo aspettare il 2010 per il terzo?

Non si sa mai. Se ci sarà un terzo album dei Sons Of Angels sarà sicuramente composto da nuovo materiale.

Pensi che a livello di promozione internet possa aiutare le band? Come vedresti l’idea di un sito dei Sons Of Angels che vende i vostri album e parla della vostra storia, con foto attuali e di concerti del passato mai viste prima, che suppongo tu possieda?

Penso che internet sia il canale giusto per promuovere band come i Sons Of Angels con il materiale che hai detto... Yeah! Hai ragione, ci sono alcune belle foto live!

So che gli altri membri della band sono impegnati in diversi progetti musicali, come te nel passato con Psycho Motel e altro, quindi cosa possiamo dire ai fan dei Sons Of Angels oggi? Penso che ”reunion” sia una parola chiave per molti gruppi... che ne pensi?

Non credo che ci si possa aspettare la band nella sua formazione originale, ma non escludo la possibilità di vedere un’altra versione di nuovo al lavoro.

Vuoi dire qualcosa in più che ti riguarda o a proposito dei Sons Of Angels che dobbiamo sapere?

A coloro che pensano di aver ascoltato tutte le nostre canzoni, posso dire che il singolo ”Cowgirl” ha una b-side intitolata ”Black Desire”. C’è anche un meraviglioso brano chiamato ”Wallflower’s Heart” (uno dei miei preferiti) contenuto nella versione giapponese di Slumber, molto simile a ”Lonely Rose”. Oltre a queste canzoni, ci sono anche alcune registrazioni demo.

How did the band born and why you decided for Sons Of Angels as the band name?

The band was put together by Lars K. and Torstein. I joined after they put up an audition to get a singer. Actually I was to late for the audition but since they were not satisfied with the ones that first turned up, I got the chance and I think we all knew it was right quite instantly! The other two members came in short after.

I never heard about an Italian concert of SOA, can you tell me why?

No, sadly we never had the chance to tour Italy. In 1990 we had an American tour, some selected gigs in England as well as a Scandinavian tour (with Magnum) and a German tour (with Steelheart). 

On the net is impossible to find a web site or a blog dedicated to the band?Is this a particular marketing choose?

No, a web site is something we've been talking about getting for some years know, hopefully it will happen in a quite near future! 

The video of "Cowgirl" is the only one that fans can see...and that with difficult... something more  that we need to know about that or more videos exist and we don't know of them?

"Cowgirl" was the only official video the band ever did, recorded in Paris in april 1990.

The Look of the band in the 90s was similar to other aor american bands like Firehouse for example... so in which kind of rock you can insert the music of your band?

Being not totally shure I understand the question, I think that SOA can be called melodic hard rock or maybe as we often were referred to at the time -as Scandinavian funkmetal (with Electric Boys as the other main exponent).

I think a big difference between you and other bands is at first the guitar sounds...as I can see in the cd inside photos... Kramer guitars... which have a particlar sound that today is rare to hear.... do you think that the different sound and maybe European music ideas could make the difference?

We definetly had something European about us that the americans liked very much, whether it was the guitarsound or the songwriting I'm not shure, maybe the first is a question to ask the guitarist, Staffan William-Olsson?

Talking about Slumber with the Lion... you  define it as a "secret release", why?

Well, the release itself was maybe not a secret but the origin of the album certainly has been something of a secret. When it came out in 2002 the record company Z Records wanted it to look like a new release so we did not speak any of when the songs was recorded. But I can state now - for the first time - that the album was ten years old at the time of the release! The recordings were done from dec 1990 to march 1992 and the album was meant to be released the same year. After problems with record companies the band broke up and went "slumbering" together with the album for ten years.

When I bought that album I was sure to find new photos and I was ansious to find SOA ten years later.... but a particular surprise as been brought to my atention... the same first album photos. Why that?

I guess that question is pretty much answered in the above. We thought it would be weird to have new photos on a ten year old album.

With the release of Slumber with The Lion you said "if this album does well you can be sure that we would like to do another one".... so what happened? Or we have to wait for the third in 2010?

You never know :-) If there's gonna be a third SOA album that will definetly be a new one.

 Don't you think that the internet can help bands to their promotion?How could you see an internet SOA website today... selling your albums and telling the history of the band, actual photos and conerts photos never seen before?

I think internet is absolutely the right channel to promote bands like SOA ... with the stuff you mentioned yeah, you're right.. there are quite a few nice live pictures taken :-)

 I know that the other band members are all with other different music projects, like you in the past with Psycho Motel and more... so what can we say to SOA fans today?I think that "reunion" is a kind of Keyword today for many bands... don't you?

I don't think one can expect to se the band in it's original form but I will not outrule the possibility of some version of the band working together again.

Would you say something more about you or about SOA that we have to know?

For those who might wonder if they've heard all the songs we recorded I can tell that the single "Cowgirl" have a B-side called "Black Desire" and there is also a wonderful song called "Wallflower's heart" (one of my own favourites) on the Japanese release of "Slumber....", that last song is a bit similar to "Lonely Rose". Apart from these two songs there are som demo-recordings as well.
